Stranger Things genre is science fiction, horror and fantasy.
3) Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting, setting) and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation in the opening 8 minutes of Stranger Things. What is being communicated to the audience? How does the mise-en-scene help to communicate the genre of Stranger Things?
lighting and colour:
At the start of the scene there were bright flickering lights which were included in the lab, Will's shed, elevator, garage and the bike headlight. This could connote fear or a threat. The green tint to the light could include the genre of sci-fi. The first 8 minutes are at nights therefore its set in the dark and the night which might connote ominous and threatening danger.
Setting and props:
The setting is a sinister,dark forest with mist and fog. The games the kids at the table are playing is dungeons and demogorgon. Which is a 80s games which shows the era.The sprinklers can connote the main characters are middle class and have a great life with a nice house.
Costume/Makeup:
The lab coat can connote a scientist which is later proven when Will bikes into a restricted laboratory. The boys costume are brightly coloured which can connote their age or their youth and also proves they era (1980s). Also, the mum has a very 80's hair cut and the dad has a sweater vest which is a middle age man thing in the 80s.
