Industry and audience power essay
“The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
I think that the Audience have slightly more power but the media companies still grasps some control. This essay will explore how the audience have more power than media companies and how the internet affects this.
In the music industry changes the internet has provoked are like: YouTube, Soundcloud, Spotify and streaming apps like Apple music and etc. Also you can download music. Plus, the artists don’t rely on their record label heavily.
The advantages of this are that there’s free content for audiences on demand, and everyone has a chance to make it big. The wider range of audience from different countries and places makes everything in the music industry global such as K-Pop, J-Pop and Russian music. On the other hand, the disadvantages of this might be that the music could be at a loss of quality and the record label could use auto tune on the artists’ music to get there cost up. Excited fans could illegally download the music which makes it hard for the companies and artist to have an income. And therefore could lead to file sharing.
In the film and television industry, changes that have happened due to the internet are the small company like Netflix now have 100m Subscribers and BBC IPlayer have become the ideal site or app to watching British TV. Advantages of this are that it’s on demand and binge watching on multiple devices has finally become possible. Live streaming, and variety as HD quality has a become new possibility.
The advantages for this are that its on demand and binge watching is available to multiple platforms. There contains more variety and choice to see what to watch and the quality therefore increases and becomes nice and HD. Also, now live streaming is a possibility and it can cause the audience to enjoy more and experience the show or film live with other audience.
In contrast, illegal downloading, file sharing are very difficult to control. This could be a loss of revenue/ especially film. The traditional TV channel tends to struggle more as people would rather just go on Netflix or BBC IPlayer. The quality also decreases and the creativity goes to loss and sequels also become the original but less experienced class. Regulation is now easy to break making anyone access anything.
The big change the internet has caused in the print (newspaper) is that audiences can access the news online, citizen journalist exists and younger audience are not buying newspapers as often as the 90s.Aditionally, Fake news can ruin someone’s day and also career.
But, the advantages of this are anyone can share news on the internet with the power of their phones. You can access news from every device and news in instantly on demand. News doesn’t need to be paid for everywhere and wiki leaks can inform people about news. Citizen journalist can report things they have witnessed and seen like the George Floyd incident in America.
However, not all this news is reliable and not all citizen journalists are as experienced and willing to investigate corrupt politicians. The lack regulation can make anyone post anything which anyone could witness and find it inappropriate or might need a trigger warning. The media companies cannot stop people from posting fake news and it could then make the media companies lose a lot of audiences and revenue. You also need a sense of trust to believe this type of news and some companies and newspapers (The New York Times) also might need people to pay for the newspaper which isn’t essential for everyone.
Finally, whether “The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” might remain equal. In my opinion the audience has gained much more power than before leaving media companies shocked and but media companies also will have equal power as they are the ones controlling boundaries and choices the audience couldn't' have decided on. Alternatively, the audience and media companies have equal power which the internet has given them.
