Tatler CSP case study

 Introduction - Tatler Media pack

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?
 The editor introduces the magazine with strong adjectives like: fabulous, sensational and also says the magazine is for the richest people in the country.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?
Average HHI:£261,572, Average age:41,Gender:women 73%,ABC1:83%, London/SE:70%. These demographics suggests that Tatler readers are women in there 40's who are middle class to upper class.

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?
96% of Tatler reader are fashion designers and 81% of  Tatler reader own designer shoes and accessories. On average Tatler's audience spend £843 million last year.

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?
Special editions of Tatler throughout the years are: travel guide, wedding guide, beauty and cosmetics spa guide, watches and jewellery guide and school guide. This could suggest that Tatler audience could go splurge on their appearance and education as they are most likely upper class. The psychographic audience group which fits Tater readers the most would be succeeders.
Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts? Here's a blog to help you with this as we haven't been able to complete the Photoshop typography lesson yet due to Covid-19.
The title Tatler is written in serif and the cover line is written in sans. The connotations of the serif font is that when used it gives a professional and more established on the other hand the sans serif is more of a modern and approachable font. 

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?
The cover line appeals to the audience by using star appeal and 'one month gap year' appeals to university students. 

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The pink could connote femininity, and the green/yellow contracts with the background..

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)
The central image is designed to create interest by her wearing mainly gold pieces which could appeal to middle class women also the jewellery mainly appeals to women as its pearls. Her makeup with the strong dark eyeliner and green/blue sparkling eyes. 


Representations

1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (E.g. men/women/white people etc. Look at the image and text/cover lines to help here)
Types of people that are represented are white women and men as they have cover line of James Corden and Georgina Bevan who are both white.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
The cover lines suggest that rich beings in the are on the guest list of very prestige parties and how rich people get into prestigious university.
3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
The stereotypes that is reinforced is that all wealthy white women are the same.
4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?
The preferred reading would be that its a magazine for  the wealthy and rich middle aged women, the oppositional reading would be that its  a magazine for teenagers who want to find their style. 

Social and cultural context

1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
The aspect of British life that's not reflected is of the people who are less fortuned and live of government benefits.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?
This suggest that Tatler readers are wealthy and can afford all these luxuries not a normal person can afford.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017? 
People of colour may feel offened and insulted as there is a white person is shown as wealthy rich person who can afford luxuries.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?
The  regularly features on Tatler magazine are the serif title on the middle top of the cover, a central picture of a women with makeup or looking glamourous.
