Introduction to Science-fiction TV drama

1) How does Class meet the conventions of a TV drama series?

Class meets TV drama conventions by having a school setting making it a high-school/teen drama but has the main genre of science fiction. Also the show includes a lot of conflict as they are trying to fight and defeat the aliens?

2) What conventions of the science-fiction genre can you find in the Class trailer? List as many as you can and use NCIS to help you.

Conventions of the science-fiction genre that I can find are setting where it shows different planets with lave and a hellish feel. Also the iconography which uses shadow, darkness and laser lights which has elements of horror and science-fiction to show the aliens have invaded earth which is really troublesome and the narrative has connotations of the science-fiction genre because its narrative is about aliens invasion, parallel universes, dangers and threats to the world, war and conflict, and portals to other worlds and planets. Lastly the characters which are humans and aliens and the doctor.

3) What other genres are suggested by the trailer (e.g. horror)? Is Class an example of a modern hybrid-genre show?

In the Class trailer it shows other genres which suggests its an example of a hybrid-genre show as it has included elements of horror and sci-fi. The iconography of  shadows and darkness seeps into the horror genre. It can also be seen as a teen-drama as it has teenagers as main characters. So Class would be an example of a modern hybrid genre.

4) Class is a spin-off from Doctor Who. At what point does the character of the Doctor appear in the trailer?

Class is a spinoff of Doctor Who and towards the end (1:15) the Doctor appears and says 'you've heard of me haven't you' hes talking to the audience and is calling for people who watched Doctor Who saying that this show has the same themes and trying to get Doctor Who watchers to watch Class.

5) Who do you think the target audience for Class is? Is this a typical target audience for the science-fiction genre? Give reasons for your answer.

The target audience for class would be teenagers as the main characters are teenagers in the show and also could maybe appeal to Doctor Who fans because the themes of the show are generally the same and as it is a spin-off of Doctor Who it’ll be very similar therefore enticing previous doctor who audiences.
