Updated Statement Of Intent

-Name: Replica

-Genre: science fiction

-Time: last 2 minutes of series 1, episode 1

-Narrative: In this TV show, we are introduced to the main protagonist, Shruti as she is walking down her street, attempting to get home. However, as she is preoccupied by her thoughts, a misconception occurs causing Shruti to be in a difficult situation. This valiant female protagonist is determined to investigate the mystery of her unwelcomed guest who has trespassed into her room.

I intend to meet the brief by including two locations: Shruti’s house and her deserted streets. My last 2 minutes will also include 2 characters that are: the protagonist, Shruti and an anonymous character, who is throughout referred to as ‘it’.  The use of diegetic sound will be able to add a sense of realism for the audience and non-diegetic will be applied to covey the genre of science fiction, making the setting appeal more. The main camera shots that will be present are close-up to reveal a character’s emotion and facial expression and wide shot to showcase details and important information present in the background. The narrative resolution will be communicated by the end of the 2 minutes where Shruti reveals the identity of the anonymous antagonist causing disruption in their relationship. The use of Propp’s character theory will be shown to recognise Shruti as the protagonist and the anonymous ‘it’ as the antagonist, this can be used to show the difference in character development between both characters.

Both characters will be able to subvert traditional stereotypes as characters in this series as both are independent women. Historically, women were typically given smaller roles that involved less or no violence to portray them as weak and unguarded, however, Shruti is able to prevent this by being independent and solving her own problems. This can be shown near the beginning where she explores who has unexpectedly visited her room and replaced her. My cast will be carefully chosen to present different diversities that are not widely and accurately presented in British shows. The main protagonist, Shruti, expresses this by using an individual from an Indian background subverting the stereotype the main character being an ignorant, white male.

My target audience will be mostly female older teenagers as well as young adults to reflect the change in modern day society. They will be from a working-class family who enjoy the TV genre of science-fiction and mystery and will anticipate for each scene’s camera work, enjoying the sensation of being astonished by the action scenes. The use of audience pleasures will be projected throughout the series as:

-Visceral- the audience will be able to feel a physical thrill of the chase scene between Shruti and ‘it’.

-Vicarious- experience a new encounter and the forming of a friendship between the characters.

-Relationships- they will be able to understand and relate to Shrutis problems as a teenager in an Asian household.

-Diversion/entertainment-audience will be too preoccupied by latest released episode helping them escape their daily lives of stress.
